Punkkleid Sewerafashion

Do you find it hard to get your hands on cool knitfabric for adults? I know the struggle, it ain’t easy to find something that doesn’t look like a fairytale fabric, all soft colors, with birds or simply one colored. When my dear friend Laura from fabric store ‘Leleli’ showed me one that was made for combining with a kids print fabric, i fell in love with it right away and had a very clear picture in mind, of what the dress will look like. Nothing cute, nothing like kidsclothes, but rather a real sexy and cool dress for myself. It took a while to finish it, but now i’m perfectly satisfied with the result 🙂

Na, was meint ihr denn so dazu?

This is what i had in mind – to me, the fabric looked a bit like some ‘punk’ stuff i remember from back when i was younger. I added a pair of Doc Martens, some studs to the sleeves and pocket and i wore my ‘today i’m all cool’ attitude.

The studs as details can sometimes completely change the look of something, i like to play with that. And for my punk dress here, i just HAD to add them, to give it the style i wanted to.

The base for this dress is the Co-Z Dress sewing pattern, but i experimented a bit with the sleeves. I’ve seen them in fashion magazines and my sewing pattern book before, but i never actually made them myself. So first i constructed the new pattern for the sleeves, added some fusible interlining to the ‘stand up’ part and then added to studs. They help the sleeves stand up by pinning down the seam allowance and give the dress some of its ‘edgy’ look. The same goes for the studs at the pockets, i didn’t topstitch them either, so the studs not only look good there, but also keep my pockets neatly pinned down.

Honestly, i don’t like checked or striped fabrics, well i do like to look at them, but not to sew them together. I remember this one skirt at the very beginning of my tailor education, it was made of a really small ‘pepita’ houndstooth fabric and i had to handstitch the seams and then stitch them in the reverse direction again, so it’s staying in place. A pain in the ass work to do and i still don’t like it. Nevertheless i end up with square or stripe fabric over and over again – because once it’s done, you’ll admire the finished work. And i can tell you, another dress is coming up, this one will be a woven tartan.
I wore my punk dress this weekend to the ‘Sew2016‘ sewists meeting and got a lot of compliments. So I will review the pattern for a summer edition with some additional sleeves 😀

Eure Carina
